When in Rome...
by Bethany Shady

I never would’ve thought that I would write for a column called “Hooray For Comics.” “Poop on Comics” or “Hooray for Anything But Comics” maybe, but I never thought there would be a time in my life when I would be cheering for comics. And yet, here I am.

It started in March at Wizard World – Los Angeles when I and my handsome manfriend were cruisin’ the booths and I spotted a comic titled I Feel Sick by Jhonen Vasquez. Being the huge fan that I am of Jhonen’s old Nickelodeon cartoon, Invader Zim, I decided to risk my $5 and purchase the two book mini-series. I had succumbed to the world of comics and it only took two minutes and five dollars. I’m weak.

I Feel Sick was amazing. It literally had me laughing out loud. I loved it. But how could I, Bethany Shady, a hot petite young hipster like myself LOVE a comic book? I didn’t think it was in my constitution. Oh, but it is…and me likey.

It was after I Feel Sick that I decided to open myself up to the world of Indie comics. That’s right, INDIE. I would NEVER give in to the evils of the fanboy, superheros with super powers and big tittied woman in scantily clad cloth for teenage (or thirty year old) boys to jerk off to shit. I’ll leave that Rob Liefeld shit to the rest of you. I want the good shit. The stuff of substance.

My sexy manfriend and I headed off to Hi De Ho Comics in Santa Monica where I continued to feed my new interest and I forked over $13 for Daisy Kutter: The Last Train; A trade paperback about a badass chick in the wild west who has balls bigger than any man around. While the art and characters were strong, I was a little disappointed by the somewhat uneventful story line. But hey, I have ADD and need constant stimulation, so my opinion on that doesn’t mean much anyway.

One week later I spent another fifty-five dollars on comics. FIFTY FIVE! I coulda gotten a whole lotta hooch with that amount of dough! I bought two more Jhonen Vasquez trades, Johnny The Homicidal Maniac and Squee!, since I knew that anything written by him was sure to be great. I also picked up another trade called Dead@17 just because it had a cool cover and had the word “dead” in the title. Its writer/illustrator, Josh Howard, obviously has a passion for drawing cute indie chicks with short hair in barely anything clothing which bored me after the first six panels, but then the ZOMBIES caught my attention. After about the first fifteen pages though, everything kinda fell flat when the theme turned to a “chosen one” type. It was a very cool concept, but I felt there could have been a lot more depth in the story.

So, now I find myself excited about Wednesday nights when my luscious manfriend wants to head to the comic shop for the new releases, and I can cruise the indie sections. Does that make me a nerd now? Maybe. But a happy nerd for sure.

Beth drank the comic Kool-aid. She's all ours now!
