Lucky Penny
by D.J. Kirkbride

This morning I noticed a penny on the road. Walking from my work's parking garage to the office building I work in everyday, there was a fairly new, shiny, copper penny, Lincoln's emaciated face up right there by my feet. Normally the type to squat down and pick up damn near anything shiny, I instead passed it right by, noting this, but not giving it much thought at the time.

Could it be that pennies are more of a hassle than anything else? Maybe for some, but any money helps in my case. Usually, the main reason to pick up a penny is the whole good luck thing. For that the penny has to be face up, as I'd noted this one was. The other stipulation that I learned fairly late in the game is that you cannot spend said penny. To spend it is to lose its luck powers, making it a normal, nearly worthless penny. That's the main reason I couldn't be bothered with picking it up. I'm not going to collect pennies, so, face-up or no, I'm getting no luck from one.

Oh, and there's no such thing as luck anyway. Still should’ve picked the thing up, though. Crap.
